Setting Your Own Rules!

Within the past couple of weeks I have been really contemplating a few things.

The first thing I have really been focused are my rules. Believe it or not, everyone has rules and it is very important to make sure you know what yours are so that you may follow them.

When ever you read a self help book or go to a personal development seminar, the people speaking or talking tend to lean you towards their rules and beliefs.

While reading a book the other day, I realized I was trying to apply everyone elses rules to my life without first trying to make some for myself.

In a nut shell, this is what I mean.

People are always looking to others for the ways to solve problems and fix certain situations. Instead of trying to do that all the time, why not try and set some for yourself?

In my recent bout with procrastination, I was looking for ways to stop it. I was reading all kinds of books and doing a lot of research online. I finally realized that if I wanted to really stop procrastination, I would have to set my own rules. Doing this would give me a sense of ownership and commitment I have never knew before. And guess what happened when I set my own rules? I followed them to the “T”.

I know this post may seem vague but setting you own rules is not hard at all. What you want to do is sit down and categorize the things that are important in your life. For example:

1.) Health

2.) Family

3.) Work

4.) Finances

These are all categories I used when doing this exercise. Now under each one of those categories decide what it is that you want from them, and set some rules.

Another example is this; when looking at health, I decided that it would be unacceptable to workout no less than three times a week. Then I set up a workout plan and the time during the day that I wanted to complete this certain goal (working out).

The most important thing you have to do when setting your own rules is deciding why it is you want to accomplish something. If you just say, “I want to work out to be skinny!”, that wont work. You need to convince yourself that you have to workout to not only stay skinny or become skinny, but for the obvious health benefits that are associated with it. You want more energy, higher self esteem, greater vitality etc.

Once you have the reasons why you want that certain goal, you go ahead with creating your own rules. This is what makes you commit and stay with it.

So before you leave this page, get out a piece of paper and write down some certain categories you would like to change in your life. You can use the ones I have listed above to get you started. After you have those written down, make a strong reason why you have to improve that category. Maybe you need more money to pay the bills or to help a family member out, whatever.

After that is done you proceed to making you own rules.

I did this step as follows.

In regards to goal setting here are the rules I came up with.

1.) Have Weekly Goals

2.) Have Bi-Weekly Goals

3.) Monthly Goals

4.) 6 Month Goals

5.) Yearly Goals

6.) Have Writing Material With Me At All Times. (this was just in case I came up with an idea or remembered something to do that I needed to write down.)

7.) Review Goals DAILY and Have Them Printed Out On My Desk.

8.) Say No To EVERYTHING Until My Work Is Done.

9.) Have Everything Planned For A Certain Time During The Day.

10.) Be Patient. (I know that everything doesn’t always turn out the way you want it to so you have to be patient.)

So there are all of my rules for the goal setting category.

That’s all you have to do. Doing this will definitely make you way more productive and more likely to follow through with things.

Well there you go. If you have any questions regarding this you know what to do, leave a comment.

Good luck and I hope this works well for you.
